Our Discoloured Town - A Creative Writing Extract

Hello everyone! 🍁

This piece is part of a larger collection of extracts, inspired by “Creative Writing” by Eva Katz. This particular extract was written by me inspired by the picture below, created by the amazing artist Jennifer Maravillas (And her work really is marvellous - pun completely intended) Enjoy! 🍁

With all the buildings painted bright, the residents thought their homes, streets and lives would be enriched with love, colour and something special yet to be received.

An excitement they had once known, a childhood glimpse of laughter, and they simply wished for a touch of it back.

But their hopes and dreams were soon met with a further darkness, beyond the disorder they all knew. The colours began to fade, from neon pinks and vibrant yellows, to something dull and dark, increasing the shadows within the streets and the people.

The yellows became dirty, and the village became tea stained with only drips of colour that remained. Soon the physician found himself in the grappling grey, knowing that his one idea to instil joy had failed them all.

And unknowing of what to do next, he turned to his son, and the box of crayons he loved so much, remembering where the idea initially came from and from his mouth came a suggestion deemed genius by the whole town.

"Father, why is there no white?"

"White, my son? I'm not quite sure"

His son passed him the box of crayons and ran over to his bed, getting ready for a night of rest and the physician stared and stared at the box of crayons, comparing the colours to the flood of illusion outside.

Amongst the sea of complete colour and stained reflections shining in the window. It stood out to him. "White. Of course" The words slipped from his lips as he leapt down the stairs, ready to uncover his newest idea.

The next morning the towns people awoke to their town completely plastered in white, shadows became reflections of light and the rays gleamed throughout the village and the people. It was bright and completely captivating. The physician was awarded the best achievements of the town and his work is recognised as genius to this day.

Thank You for reading! 🍁 I hope you enjoyed this piece! I found this image one of the hardest ones to write about in this book as there is so much going on and I usually work with more muted pieces. Jennifer Maravillas is such a talented artist and it felt amazing to write about her art. Follow the link in the sources below to see more of her work!

The prompt I'm working from is from the creative writing book above! 'This entire town suffers from seasonal affective disorder because there is little sunlight. The towns physician prescribes painting all of the buildings in bright colours - What happens next?' Click the link below under 'Sources' to find the Amazon link to the book!

As always, thank you for reading - I hoped you enjoyed! Feel free to leave a comment, like or reach me on social media!🍁

I hope you all have a lovely day,

🍁Stay smiling
