How to get away with murder - Season 5 - A Review

Updated: Dec 18, 2019

Wow. Where do I begin? I binged Season One to Four and oh my, did I binge Season Five when I found its appearance on Netflix this December!

I personally love law/crime series and this one has me gripped from the start! Season Four left us on a huge cliffhanger with the appearance of Gabriel Maddox and Franks phone call, giving us only a couple of words. “He’s here.” Leaving us all in complete ore to know who this new character may be.

At first I was a little… Let’s say apprehensive about the return of this series and the new implementation of a character; as on a first impression it comes across as a desperate attempt to replace Wess Gibbons and continue the series for the sake of it. Boy was I wrong. This series was something far from a desperate attempt to continue the series.

It was an incredibly bold move for the creators Nowalk and ShondaLand Productions to introduce a new character right at the end of Season Four, but the way that they did it was utterly perfect.

Most people say that new characters ruin series and they stop watching when old characters leave. I said I would stop watching when Wess died. However the way they introduced Gabriel, it made me want to keep watching more and more, keeping me completely engaged throughout.

Rome Flynn was introduced to us within this series and was a very self assured and cocky new character. I believe this was done to show his personality progression throughout the series and to emphasise how Analise has a way of backing her students down. We were left wondering at the end of season two, who was this new character and what role would he play?

Initially, I wished that Gabriel was going to be Analise and Sam's child. It had always been a prominent and consistent piece of information throughout all Seasons that Analise had lost her baby. Who knew if she was given another woman's baby when hers was born? Even I thought it could be a child of Bonnies, as hers was taken by her father.

However, did anyone really expect Gabriel to be Vivians? Did anyone even remember Vivian? Because I certainly did not expect THIS twist. Which if im honest…was somewhat of a disappointment to me; but what they lacked in baby drama they soon achieved in intensifying and deepening Gabriel’s storyline, specifically in relation to who his father was.

Sam Keating was always a character I never liked, even from the first series where he was portrayed to be a loving husband - he really was not. Contrasting this, I really loved Franks revival throughout this series; seeing Frank with his gadgets back and getting back to “Bad Frank” made the series into something it really needed to regain in Season 5.

Timothy Hutton plays an amazing and crucial part in this Season, giving a new character a lot of depth and instantly giving us a backstory that was seamlessly slotted between the continuous drama of the Season. Throughout, the character ‘Emmett’ was, to me, a character to be very wary of and one to not be trusted. This was the perfect impression for the writers to give because low and behold - HE was a GOOD guy. The acting and precise nature of the story here gave us the correct impressions to mislead us and shock us at the end.

When looking at Tegan, she was always a character I was unsure about, especially with the Castillo storyline - which apparently is going to keep running through to Season 6. She has proven her worth in this series, keeping her leadership incentives and boss-woman willpower, yet still maintaining a loving character.

Her relationship with Michala was incredibly strained throughout this Season, which I am eager to see more of and I only expect this drama will only continue into Season 6. I was also 100% surprised and taken aback with Tegans twist in the tale involving Agent Talesco at the end of the Season, and her part in removing Talesco from the task!

Having Analise and Tegan at the C&G corporation was an amazing move on the writers part as it shows the strong nature of the women in this industry, which is an incredibly current thing to be presenting to audiences; and which is a huge theme continued throughout the whole series.

Although we have seen some downfalls and weaknesses within female characters in this series, Analise and Tegan are two of the strongest characters that have remained true. Bonnie’s character has also developed greatly in this Season as we see her open up some old wounds into the past of her abuse and finally do something good by allowing herself to love the D.A. Miller (Which of course was not meant to be).

I have to say overall, this season did NOT disappoint, - what with the new character development, a loving story and of course, the deathly crimes we all know and love. Analise’s complete power- house character only develops further in this series, as we see her return to her old drinking habits, but we also see her strive further in her class action suit. We also got to see a possible romantic interest begin to develop, but is Analise is ready for this?

Hopefully in the next season we will see Vivian make an appearance and get to see Analise winning Emmetts case! I also can’t wait to see if their love story progresses, and if Machela pursues the quest for her birth family. Here's hoping all will be revealed in Season Six…
